When the Savior foretold the destruction of the Jewish temple, His disciples asked him: "Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?" (Matthew 24:3) In response, the Savior said, among other things: "Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh: So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors." (Matthew 24:32-33)
"And the poor and the meek shall have the gospel preached unto them, and they shall be looking forth for the time of my coming, for it is nigh at hand— And they shall learn the parable of the fig tree, for even now already summer is nigh." (D&C 35:14-16)
The Lord has given us a long list of prophecies of events to watch for that will lead up to His Second Coming. Revelation given during the fullness of the times of the Gentiles - our time - further elucidates what we can expect during these events.
In our dispensation, the Savior reminded us that when He first gave these prophecies, His disciples were troubled by it. But He also pointed out that when these awful things begin to happen, we can know that the "promises" shall be fulfilled also:
"And I said unto them: Be not troubled, for, when all these things shall come to pass, ye may know that the promises which have been made unto you shall be fulfilled. And when the light shall begin to break forth [a reference to the restoration of the gospel], it shall be with them like unto a parable which I will show you— Ye look and behold the fig trees,
and ye see them with your eyes, and ye say when they begin to shoot
forth, and their leaves are yet tender, that summer is now nigh at hand; Even so it shall be in that day when they shall see all these things, then shall they know that the hour is nigh. And it shall come to pass that he that feareth me shall be looking forth for the great day of the Lord to come, even for the signs of the coming of the Son of Man." (D&C 45:35-39)
Together with the signs and earthquakes and commotion and hail and fire and blood would come the angelic ministry that would bring in the fullness of the Gentiles, complete with temple-building, establishment of a Zion society, restoration of priesthood authority and the Savior reigning in our midst. All this was foretold by John the Revelator and corroborated by the likes of Isaiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, and many more.
During His mortal ministry, the Savior gave the parable of the Ten Virgins, showing the importance of being spiritually prepared so that our faith can endure the coming trials. As an avid student of the scriptures, I testify that one of the most powerful ways we can prepare ourselves for the coming of the Lord is through deep personal scripture study. Surely the Lord did say:
"Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me" (John 5:39)
Nephi said:

No, although the scriptures show extensively that troubling times are ahead, they also show that we are seeing beautiful promises being fulfilled right under our noses! And more is coming! It helps me and my faith a great deal to be able to anticipate these things in greater detail, to have in my mind a picture of how they occurred in the past, and how they will recur now, in a modern context. It helps me a great deal to realize that much of what the scriptures tell us about the last days just preceding the Second Coming has already been fulfilled.
Studying these verses has helped me a great deal to anticipate the Second Coming of the Lord with greater hope and joy than trepidation.
The following is a table containing a rough selection and categorization of every passage of scripture I could find that had to do with the Second Coming. In many cases, these verses foretell the Second Coming, in other cases, they tell of events in the past that are, I believe, likely to recur and which therefore foreshadow the Second Coming.
